Justice

Overview

This work is a video installation composed of two types of footage that deal with different times and places, but share a common theme. One is a fiction created by reinterpreting the process stemming from the 1970s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confidentiality leakage case (commonly known as the Nishiyama case) that led to the enactment of the State Secrecy Law.
The other is a record of the 2007 trial in the Senufo society of the Republic of Mali, West Africa, which is a re-edited version of the research material footage taken by cultural anthropologist Daisuke Mizoguchi.
When I followed the history of the Nishiyama case, I felt that it was an absurd judgement and that the people of this country had no right to know the government information. Moreover, looking at the results of the trial regarding the wife of Toshio Akagi, a former employee of the Ministry of Finance, it is clear that the right to know the government information is still being neglected.
On the other hand, when I saw the scene of the trial involving the witch doctor photographed by Mr. Mizoguchi, I witnessed an absurd “judgment” of a different dimension from the Nishiyama case. Looking at these events, I realized that the “justice” we think of is not so obvious, but may in fact be built on very fragile values.
Can universal “justice” exist? And if so, what would it be?

本作品は、時代も場所も離れた、しかし共通の主題を持つ2種類の映像によって構成された映像インスタレーションである。 ひとつは、1970年代の外務省機密漏洩事件（通称：西山事件）から特定秘密保護法が成立されるまでの経過を再解釈して作成したフィクションである。もうひとつは、2007年の西アフリカ・マリ共和国のセヌフォ社会における裁判の様子を記録したものであり、文化人類学者の溝口大助氏が撮影した研究資料映像を再編集した。
西山事件の経緯を辿ってみて感じたのは、あまりにも不条理な判決であるという点と、「この国に国民の知る権利は存在しないのではないか」という憤りだった。そして、財務省元職員である赤木俊夫さんの妻が起こした裁判の結果を見ても、知る権利が今でもないがしろにされ続けていることは明らかである。 一方、溝口氏が撮影した呪術師による住民の裁判風景を見たとき、西山事件とは違う次元の不条理な「裁き」を目の当たりにした。 これらの出来事を眺めた時、私たちが考える「正義」は自明のようであってそうではなく、実は非常に脆い価値観の上にかろうじて成り立っているのかもしれないという思いが湧いた。
普遍的な「正義」とは存在し得るのか。そして、もし存在するとしたら、それはどのようなものなのか。
