Collaboration with Hideto Miyuki
Overview
This art project, a collaborative effort between visual artist Yasushi Noguchi and filmmaker Hideto Miyuki, delves into the tragic tsunami-related deaths of elementary school students at Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture during the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Over the past decade, the artists have meticulously examined a vast array of materials, including news articles and books, to reconstruct the events that unfolded in the 51 minutes between the earthquake and the tsunami, and to explore why the government failed to provide adequate support to the bereaved families in the aftermath of the disaster. Based on the "facts" gleaned from their research, the artists have created a series of interconnected video works that present a multifaceted perspective on the underlying issues of the Okawa Elementary School incident.
